Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, located approximately 20 miles outside of Detroit, Mich., is making amends for subjecting passengers to aging and unkempt facilities for years with the opening in 2002 of the new 97-gate Edward H. McNamara Terminal. The state-of-the-art facility houses Northwest Airlines, which uses the airport as a major hub, and its partner airlines -- Continental, Mesaba, KLM, Lufthansa, British Airways and Royal Jordanian. Curing the travel blahs, concourses in the McNamara Terminal are linked by a 900-foot tunnel that features a synchronized light and sound show. The remaining major airlines that serve the airport operate out of the dated Smith Terminal (without any gee-whiz effects), which is slated to replaced by a new North Terminal in 2008. The terminals are connected by free shuttle buses that run every 15 to 20 minutes.
